Using VHB Tape for Sign Installation

Wall mounting signs using VHB tape - Advantages & Limitations

VHB - Stands for Very High Bond. This tape is high performance and provides a super easy solution for mounting signs under certain conditions.

What is VHB?

VHB is short for 'Very High Bond'. It is designed for high performance bonding, however there are limitations, which we will look at in this article.

VHB tape is typically comprised of a spongy foam core with adhesive applied to both sides.  The foam core can vary in depth, usually from around 0.25mm upwards.

The foam core is flexible enough to allow the adhesive to work its way between surface imperfections or slightly textured surfaces which increases the surface area for a superior bond.

We only use professional VHB tape produced by 3M who are industry leaders when it comes to bonding technologies.

Your sign will be produced with enough pre-applied VHB tape to firmly hold your sign in place.

For simple, quick and easy sign installation
• Peel film
• Press sign firmly into place.

Advantages Limitations
Very simple and quick installation Not recommended for exterior application
Suitable for smooth and slightly textured surfaces Not suitable for highly textured surfaces
Can be used with a range of sign materials Not suitable for loose surfaces such as sandstone
A possible option for surfaces that cannot be drilled

VHB Installation Guide

The VHB tape will be pre-applied to the back of your sign by our experienced crafts people, the tape quantity and positions will be strategically calculated according to the shape, size and weight of your sign.

For installation you will need a spirit level to make sure your sign is nice and level. Either a pencil, non-marking masking tape or the assistance of an extra pair of hands is highly recommended.

  1. Using the spirit level hold the level to the surface on which you wish to mount your sign, at the height you would wish the bottom of the sign to sit.

  2. Make sure the spirit level is level and mark a straight line on your mounting surface using a pencil or non marking masking tape. Alternatively, you can just ask a friend to hold your spirit level in position.

  3. Proceed to remove the red film from all of the pieces of VHB tape on your sign.

  4. Hold your sign at an angle to the wall, so that the tape is not touching the mounting surface. With the bottom edge of your sign  aligned to your level mark or resting it on the level that your assistant is holding. Slowly begin to rotate the sign towards the wall until the VHB tape touches the wall.

  5. Press the sign firmly to the mounting surfaces over the areas where the mounting tape is applied.
